Also known as ‘Silicon Valley of India’ and ‘Garden City of India’, Bangalore is a wonderful blend of past and present. It has many lakes, parks, gardens, monuments, museums and much more to visit.
Here is a list of some of the most famous tourist places in Bangalore.
Lal Bagh Botanical Garden
The Lal Bagh Botanical Garden is built on 240 acres of land. It was constructed in 1760 by Hyder Ali as a private retreat for himself. Later, it was completed by his son Tipu Sultan, who gave it the name of “Lal Bagh” because of its blooming red roses. This garden has a rare collection of tropical and sub-tropical trees and plants. It has the famous ‘Lal Bagh Rock’ that is believed to date back to 3000 million years and a glasshouse that was built in 1889 inspired by the ‘Crystal Palace’ in London. This garden accommodates more than 1000 varieties of flowers, and holds an exhibition of the rarest of flowers and hybrid vegetables on Independence Day and Republic Day.
Cubbon Park
Located in the middle of the Central Administrative area of Bangalore, and set on a 300 acre area, Cubbon Park is also known as the ‘Lung’ of the city. This park was created in 1884, by Major General Richard Sankey and was named after the then Commissioner of Bangalore, Sir Mark Cubbon. The park has a large number of exotic plants and trees, both ornamental and flowering, in over 96 species. It is a popular place for walkers, joggers and nature lovers. The park is well-maintained by the Department of Horticulture of the State of Karnataka. ‘Bal Bhavan’ within the park is a great place for the kids to enjoy. It also sports an aquarium with many varieties of exotic and ornamental fish.
Bangalore Palace
The Bangalore Palace, located near Mekhri Circle and Cantonment Railway station, is spread over an area of 430 acres. It was first owned by Reverend J Garret who was the principal of the Bangalore Central High School. Later, it was acquired by the King Chamarajendra Wodeyar in 1873. It is inspired by the ‘Windsor Castle’ and is built in Tudor and Scottish Gothic styles. It has towers, arches and turrets enclosed by beautiful gardens. The wooden structure of the palace, with its intricate carvings in the interiors as well as on the exteriors is just royal. This palace apart from being a tourist attraction, also holds important events and cultural programs.
Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace
Yet another palace, this monument was originally built by Chikkadeva Raya in mud. Just like the Lal Bagh garden, this was also reconstructed by Hyder Ali and then completed by Tipu Sultan in 1791.
